Liverpool 2-1 Everton: van Dijk helps Reds progress with late winner
It was a dramatic night for the new Liverpool acquisition, Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk, as he made his debut almost perfect by helping his side to a slippery 2-1 FA Cup win over the Merseyside rivals Everton to progress to the fourth round at the Anfield Road.

When and where did the match take place?

On Friday, 5 January 2018 at the unusual 7.55pm kick-off, Liverpool welcomed their archrivals Everton for an FA Cup third-round tie having recently drawn with Sam Allardyce's side 1-1 at Anfield in the league.

How the teams lined up:

Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Karius - Gomez, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson - Can, Milner - Mane, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain - Firmino.

Subs: Wijnaldum, Lovren, Klavan, Ings, Solanke, Ward, Alexander-Arnold.

Everton (4-2-3-1): Pickford - Kenny, Holgate, Jagielka, Martina - McCarthy, Schneiderlin - Rooney, Bolasie, Sigurdsson - Calvert-Lewin.

Subs: Williams, Niasse, Davies, Vlasic, Lookman, Robles, Baningime.

Referee: Robert Madley (West Yorkshire)

How it unfolded:

James Milner scored the opener for the Reds in the 35th minute after his fellow team-mate Adam Lallana had been brought down to the ground under a challenge with Rob Holgate, who carelessly used his hands during the moment.

With a minimum of chances in the game, however, Toffees got a cracking equalising goal via Gylfi Sigurdsson after Everton had broken following a Liverpool corner, with defender Phil Jagielka finding space and time in the Reds half to supply the Iceland midfielder on the edge of the box. Having taken it, he curled home to put the scores level.

Five minutes from time, new Liverpool record signing Virgil Van Dijk brilliantly marked his debut with the winning header that came after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain took a corner and the Netherlands centre-back directed the ball into the left side of the net. What a fantastic debut.
