However, they face a strong test of their credentials as they come up against a City side determined to wrest the crown back to Manchester.
Manchester City vs Liverpool Team News
Man City’s last league outing ended in a comfortable 0-1 victory away at Sheffield United. The Citizen’s took the lead via a first half goal from defender, Kyle Walker, but were unable to add to their tally, even as they dominated proceedings for the rest of the match. That win propelled City up to tenth on the EPL standings – albeit with a game in hand – and Guardiola’s men have collected eleven points from their opening five matches in the league.
The Citizens continued with their good run of form during midweek, as they were able to easily dispatch Olympiacos Piraeus, in their UCL round 3 match-up. That win was City’s fifth from their last six matches, and Guardiola’s men have now gone seven games unbeaten across all competitions, after a disastrous 2-5 defeat at the hands of Leicester, back in September.
Last time out in the Premier League, Liverpool posted an impressive comeback win over a spirited West Ham side, in a match tainted by VAR controversy. The Reds fell behind to an early goal from Pablo Fornals, and had to wait till late in the first half to get their equaliser via a Mo Salah penalty.
In-form forward, Diogo Jota thought he had gotten the winner in the 77th minute, but his goal was controversially ruled out. However, Jota was not to be denied, and his cool finish, barely five minutes later was enough to secure all three points for Liverpool on the day.
This win helped Liverpool maintain their number one spot on the standings for another week, and the English champions have collected sixteen points out of a possible twenty-one from their opening seven league fixtures.
The Kop are on a five-game winning run in all competitions, and have found the back of the net, two or more times in four of those fixtures.
However, for all of Liverpool’s exploits in front of goal, they are quite vulnerable at the back, and this is reflected in the fact that they have already conceded fifteen league goals this term. And surely, this is one area the tactical Pep Guardiola will be looking to exploit.
