With six points separating the two in-form French clubs, the final phases of this season is heating up and this Sunday clash has all the ingredients to make it a ‘must watch’ for the football neutrals.

Lille are doing all they can to keep a grip on fourth, and an important 1-0 win away at Nantes last week ensured the gap to them and Lyon is six points. With five victories in their last six, Christophe Galtier’s side may in-fact be looking at third spot and victory this week over Lyon would go a long way to achieving that very feat.

Lyon’s sketchy-looking February form was threatening to derail their Ligue 1 season, but it appears that the former champions have turned a corner, recording back-to-back victories – the last of which was against St-Etienne 2-0 last weekend, catapulting them up to fifth and right back in the top-four hunt.

It hasn’t always been pretty but Christophe Galtier’s men have been in great form as of late with five wins in their last six games. They’ve netted ten goals in this time with just three conceded in what has been an excellent display of balancing defence and attack.

Lille currently sit one point behind Rennes who occupy the final Champions League spot for Ligue 1 so every game matters between now and the end of the season. However, Les Dogues have had some struggles against Lyon in recent years with the fixture always throwing up great matches.

Neither team has held dominance over the fixture and that has continued to be the case in this campaign with Lille beating Les Gones back in December before Lyon edged Les Dogues on penalties in a January cup match.

However, Lille have a very solid home record that they’ll be keen to maintain here. They’ve lost just two of their 14 games at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Ligue 1 the season, those came against current top two Marseille and PSG. They’ve won the other six in this time with five clean sheets along the way.

Lyon enter this game off the back of a 5-1 drubbing by PSG. Lyon really held their own for the first hour but eventually the floodgates opened with Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick consigning them to a harsh defeat, knocking them out of the Coupe de France in the process.

This stopped Lyon in their tracks as they had been putting together a fine run of form up until then with four wins in their last five games. They had conceded just one goal in this time so it will be interesting to see if they can return to their previous defensive resilience following the defeat to PSG.

Lyon will also have to cope with being the away team here. On the road, Lyon definitely haven’t been at their best with their most recent away game being an extremely unconvincing win over relegation battling Metz.

Les Gones only managed to score from the spot and after Metz’s ‘keeper had gone up for a corner. Before this they had lost two away games, one against PSG (1-4) and the other in Nice (1-2).
