Southampton break transfer record with signing Guido Carrillo from Monaco
Southampton have announced the signing of Guido Carrillo from AS Monaco in a club-record ?19m deal on a three-and-a-half-year contract, says Southampton official website.
The 26-year-old has penned a contract until 2021 and will link up again with Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who he played under at Estudiantes.
Carrillo has made 22 appearances this season, but has started only twice in Ligue 1. He has scored 20 goals in over 50 games for Monaco since signing from Estudiantes in 2015.
Pellegrino had been expected to reinvest the windfall from Virgil van Dijk's ?75m move to Liverpool and made adding a striker a priority, with top scorer Charlie Austin injured and both Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini struggling for goals.
Saints reportedly beat Premier League rivals Crystal Palace to Carrillo's signature and the forward hailed Pellegrino as a major reason for choosing St Mary's.
Southampton had initially hoped to buy the 26-year-old for closer to ?15m and had an offer rejected this week, but have moved to conclude the deal by striking a compromise with the need for forward recruits clear, with the fee to be paid in two instalments.
