Welshman Mark Hughes sacked as Stoke City manager
Former Man City, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and QPR manager Mark Hughes has been shown the exit door after his Stoke team lost their fifth game of seven in the FA Cup 2-1 defeat by League Two side Coventry City on Saturday.
The 54-year-old manager had steered the Potters to three consecutive ninth-place finishes in the space of 2013-16 - after he succeeded Tony Pulis at the helm in 2013 - before dropping to 13th last term. And the Welshman leaves with Stoke being in the relegation zone and the worst defensive side in the league.
He became the sixth manager to have left a top-flight club this season, after Frank de Boer, Craig Shakespeare, Ronald Koeman, Slaven Bilic and Tony Pulis have all been sacked by their respective clubs.
Much contributed to his departure: a poor run of latest league defeats, including 0-1 and 0-3 at home from Newcastle and West Brom as well as 5-1 away by Tottenham, 1-0 by Burnley and the most recent 5-0 by last season's champions Chelsea.
