Virgil van Dijk set to join Liverpool for record-breaking fee of ?75m
Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk has been confirmed to be moving to the Merseyside club when the new transfer window resumes its activity on 1 January 2018.
The deal is believed to amount to over ?75 million as the Dutch defender had been linked with the Reds throughout last summer's whole transfer window, only for the negotiations to miscarry due to an alleged illegal approach.
The transfer amount set to be splashed out for van Dijk will exceed the most ever paid for a defender - Manchester City's last summer ?52m acquisition Benjamin Mendy, brought in from Monaco in July.
The 26-year-old has been involved in 12 games with Southampton, making only one appearance as a substitute. For the last three Saints league games, Virgil van Dijk was twice dropped to the bench in the 1-0 loss at Chelsea and a 1-1 home draw with Huddersfield before being left out of the squad in last round's hammering 5-2 by Spurs at Wembley.
