Representatives of unforgettable comebacks to meet in Madrid

As the Champions League edition of '18/19 concludes this Saturday, the famous theory goes true for the finalists: only the strongest survive. If they were asked to repeat what they accomplished at the last stage, I think they wouldn't come close to making that happen again.

Just to recap, both teams were 3-0 down at some point during their semi-final duels, Liverpool trailing with this score after their first-leg against Barcelona at Camp Nou and Tottenham undergoing a similar scenario just after a third of their four halves against Ajax - and yet, here they are.

Before the semi-finals started, Spurs had plenty of late drama in the uncompromising 8-goal thriller (1-0, 3-4) against fellow Englishmen from Manchester City. Let's now take an extensive look at how they have come this far and what happened that they were able to turn their 3-0 deficits around.

How they got here...

It was always going to be tough group campaigns ahead when Spurs got in the party consist of Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven and The Reds knew they would be competing with PSG, Napoli and Crvena zvezda for a place in Round of 16. After the first half of group matches, nothing was ever certain of any of them going to continue in the elite club competition. Especially for Pochettino's team, who were just with one point at the time.

To make it a long story short, it was not until very late that Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp and Tottenham with Mauricio Pochettino could celebrate their promotion from the groups where they both settled for the runners-up position: the Merseyside club have progressed on a greater number of goals scored to Napoli, and the North Londoners on away goals against third-placed Inter.

In the last 16, Klopp's outfit got the better of Bayern Munich (3-1 on agg.) before beating FC Porto on both occasions that saw Reds claim an impressive 6-1 aggregate victory. During that time, Spurs frustrated Munich's counterparts Borussia Dortmund 4-0 and got then involved in an English battle with the then odds-on favourites of the competition - Guardiola's Man City. As mentioned above, they got away winners on away goals after 4-4 in the total of their two clashes.

So, while battling 3-0 deficits in the semi-finals, it couldn't get more dramatic the way they overcame Barcelona and Ajax. The Reds fearlessly and meaningfully came out there in front of a massive Anfield crowd and crushed them all the way down by putting in a performance occasionally observed from Liverpool this season. Liverpool 4 Barcelona 0 and out Valverde's team go. For some moment it felt impossible but the reality that is.

The next day it was Spurs who stole the show. At half time in the second leg in Amsterdam, and trailing 3-0, it seemed almost inevitable for Mauricio Pochettino's men to be leaving. Still, magic came in the form of Lucas Moura when he had got his side back in the game in four minutes after 10 minutes into the second half, with two goals (55', 59') before going for the kill as he scored the late 96th-minute winner to put his team through. Epic scenes those were.

Not just a game between two rivalling teams but men behind them

Mauricio Pochettino and Jürgen Klopp are not just random names you may have heard. These two men are real heroes of their clubs. To put it into context, it's the first-ever European Cup/Champions League Final that Tottenham will have featured in, with no other coach managing to lead a Spurs team farther than the quarter-finals of '10/11 CL season.

For the Reds boss, things are looking even brighter as he has reached a second successive Champions League final with Liverpool during his ongoing four-year tenure at the club so far. It in itself piles even more pressure on his whole squad because these opportunities don't come too often. Having lost the final to Real Madrid last year, two lost finals in a row would mean a complete disaster for anybody associated with the Merseyside club.

Who will start and sit out for Spurs and Reds?

Spurs top striker Harry Kane is believed to be ready to lead the side again after missing the City - partly - and Ajax ties, while other teammates who played there look fit to start. Klopp also has everybody fit except Naby Keita, whom he confirmed injured in his pre-match press conference.

What do we make of Saturday's grand final?

All-English Champions League final is something you won't want miss for sure. Although we have seen them go head-to-head many times before, the fact they are meeting at Wanda Metropolitano for the '18/19 CL Final does not make it less intriguing and tempting to watch - especially after the routes they have made to have a chance to travel to Madrid on Saturday night.

However, Liverpool won the two meetings between the pair 2-1 this season and a repeat of the scoreline is on the cards, with the Reds favourites to be crowned champions of Europe. That said, this game represents a one-off opportunity and should not be compared to the routine league fixtures they play from week to week.

With the squads and all-round potentials they have, it's hard to give full preference to one of them but what we can be sure about is that the final in Madrid will be full of drama and the teams won't hesitate to go forward and score, so both of them scoring looks like a good option.
