Newcastle United failed to keep Rafael Benitez and he leaves
The parties have not come to an agreement to extend Benitez's contract that expires on 30th June - the date the official website of Newcastle has confirmed the Spaniard is abandoning St James' Park.
The club website also says Rafa’s coaching staff, including Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Mikel Antia, will follow him along.
Benitez took over the Magpies in 2016 after signing a three-year contract, and with the club on the verge of being relegated to the Championship because his predecessor, McClaren, had won just six of 28 Premier League games that season.
At the very first attempt, Rafa's experience, accumulated from coaching big-name clubs like Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, helped regain The Magpies' top-flight status after winning promotion in the playoffs, beating Barnsley 3-0 in the final game.
He then guided the club to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League before coming 13th the season after. Nevertheless, the 59-year-old was said to want to leave and now the Tyneside club are unable to work on with him.
"We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved."
"We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty." - says the club.
