Here's our Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory Prediction analysis: Melbourne Victory head across the Tasman needing to topple one of the Hyundai A-League’s most in-form sides or see their finals hopes all but evaporate.
Match status: 2019-20 A-League - Matchweek 23
Kick-off:
Venue: Sky Stadium (Wellington)
Carlos Salvachua’s Victory have won just one of their last eight league games and are coming off a sobering 4-1 loss to Big Blue rivals Sydney FC last Saturday.

It’s a horror run that has left the perennial finalists seven points adrift of the top six with six games left to play and with a mountain of work to do to make the Finals Series.

They can take some solace from the fact they haven’t lost to Ufuk Talay’s side in two previous meetings, both games ending in draws at AAMI Park.

But the Phoenix are a different proposition right now and have their sights on a top-two berth following their 3-1 win over Central Mariners last weekend.

Third-place Wellington are just three points behind Melbourne City and depending on how Erick Mombaerts men go on Saturday night, they could leapfrog them on the ladder with a win in this one.

Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory Team News

The Wellington Phoenix are eager to face the Melbourne Victory on home turf for the first time this season, as they look to pick up a vital three points and further solidify their place in the top six.

Twice this season these clubs have faced each other at Melbourne’s AAMI Park, and twice they’ve drawn – a one all draw in Round 5 and nil all in Round 10. In fact, five of the last six matches between these two sides have ended locked in a draw.

The Phoenix are confident it’ll be a different result at Sky Stadium this time around, where they currently own a four-match home winning streak and haven’t lost a match at since October last year.

And in securing their fourth straight win – something they haven’t achieved since March 2015 – Wellington also has the chance to move past Melbourne City and into the coveted top two.

Wellington will have an abundance of goal scorers at their disposal for this match. In addition to leading goal scorer Ulises Davila, who has scored ten goals in addition to his five assists, the squad has proven scorers in Gary Hooper (five goals, three assists) and David Ball (five goals, four assists) at their disposal.

Melbourne Victory will be desperate to win this match, or else see their Finals hopes all but disappear. Carlos Salvachua’s squad have won just one of their last eight games and are coming off a tough 4-1 loss to Sydney FC last round, which see them sitting seven points out of the top six.

Victory will rely on their top scorer Ola Toivonen (10 goals this season) as well as the ‘Kiwi Messi’ Marco Rojas, who scored a world-class goal against Sydney FC in the last round.

If they want to win, the Victory also know they will have to practice better discipline on the field; they currently rank first in the Hyundai A-League in fouls conceded, are joint-second in yellow cards and joint-first in straight red cards.

Who will win the match?

Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory Predictions

Melbourne Victory are currently enjoying a 4-match unbeaten streak but have been held to draws against Perth Glory and Adelaide United during this period.

Their last loss in the A-League was, coincidentally, when Wellington Phoenix came to town and played out a 3-2 victory over the home side. Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory have scored 88 goals between them in their 45 combined games so far this season, conceding an even 28 goals each along the way.

With two free scoring teams facing each other, and neither possessing a particularly good defense, I fancy odds of 5/6 for Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score.
Our Betting Tip:
