Following an impressive start to the season, a number of people tipped Lyon to, at least, give regular suspects, PSG a run for the Ligue 1 title. However, it is safe to say those dreams have turned into ashes. Not only are Lyon twenty-eights points off PSG in first, there is also a real danger of them missing out on European football next season.

Lyon recorded an impressive 1-0 victory over Italian champions, Juventus in their midweek UCL clash, and they will be looking to carry over that momentum into their clash with a beleaguered Saint Etienne.

The Greens can’t find a win anywhere, and there is a real danger of them getting involved in a relegation scrap. St Etienne are winless in their last five league games, losing four of those ties, and they are now just two points away from the drop zone.

They need to start picking up results if they are to stay afloat but doing this against a Lyon side high on confidence at the moment is looking like a tall order.

Saint-Étienne have been a powerful force of French football for many years and they kept up that title again last year by finishing fourth. However, this season has been a write-off as they currently sit 15th in Ligue 1 and really need to concentrate on just staying in the league more than anything.

They’ve won just one of their last six games in all competitions and faced another heartbreaking result last week. They led Reims 1-0 going into the 94th minute but threw it all away as Yann M’Vila’s foul allowed Boulaye Dia to equalise from twelve yards.

These underwhelming results have plagued Sainté this season with recent losses to newly-promoted sides Brest (2-3) and Metz (1-3) also falling under this category. Despite some success on the road against lower-league teams in the cups, in Ligue 1 Saint-Étienne’s away form has been awful.

They’ve lost each of their last six on the road with 14 goals conceded and six netted in this time so will find this trip to Lyon quite a tricky one.
Lyon enter this game on a high following their tremendous win over Juventus. They managed to edge the Old Lady in a 1-0 victory with Lucas Tousart poking home the winner.

This was just the first half of a two-legged fixture but the win has breathed new belief into this team as they went into that game with heads hanging low following some pretty poor results.

Their match before the Juve game saw them beat Metz 2-0 but it was hardly a convincing performance in the east of France. Lyon were slow in their attack and lacked that cutting edge, only netting from the penalty spot and after the opposition goalkeeper had gone up for a late Metz corner.

This was a tricky away fixture though as for much of this rather poor season, Lyon have relied on their home form for most of their success.
